The Scandal Sheets call him Lord Ice.

Ruthless, cold, precise, Julian Spenser, Marquess Dryden, tolerates only the finest—in clothes, in horseflesh, in mistresses. And now he’s found the perfect bride, the one whose dowry will restore his family’s shattered legacy and bring him peace at last: the exquisite heiress Lisbeth Redmond.

She’s about to play with fire...

But one unforgettable encounter with Lisbeth’s paid companion, Phoebe Vale, and the Marquess is undone. This quiet girl with the wicked smile and a wit to match is the first person to see through the icy facade to the fiery man beneath. But their irresistible attraction is a torment as sweet as it is dangerous, for surrendering to their desire could mean losing everything else they ever wanted.

Even though this book is the 6th one in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone.

I have to say I wasn't a fan of the beginning of this book, but I loved the ending and everything in-between. This is also the first book I've read by this author and I can say that I enjoyed her writing a lot.

This is a quite different story and that's why I liked it so much. When Phoebe meets the infamous Marquess Dryden for the first time, she's overwhelmed and overthrown by the authority he carries everywhere he seems to go. She's smitten from the first time she sees him and that's why she accepts her friend's invitation to join her at her house.

Julian is supposed to marry her friend, Lisbeth. Lisbeth is beautiful and smart, talented in many ways. She's a true lady, elegant and collected. Julian wants to marry her because her family owns a piece of land he wants and the condition to get it is to marry Lisbeth.

But Julian is completely charmed when he meets Phoebe. She's different from every other woman he knows. She's intelligent and understanding and he can talk to her about things he can't talk about with anyone else.

Their liking is mutual, but they have to hide it. Phoebe is just a teacher, after all, and a marquess shouldn't be interested in someone like her. He wants her, but he can't have her and that's eating him on the inside.

Phoebe is dying every time Julian takes Lisbeth somewhere, every time he dances with her, every time he gives her a fond look. They have to meet away from other people's eyes, they have to look at each other secretively.

And when men start surrounding Phoebe, Julian is jealous, yet he can't do anything about it because she's not really his. And Phoebe is planning to go to Africa soon, anyway, so they have no future together.

But in the end, Julian swallows his pride and puts love in the first place. He goes after Phoebe and gets his happy ever after that he wants and deserves.

This book had a lot of twists, a love triangle, friendship problems, drama ... everything you want. It was a very interesting read. Phoebe was a funny and intelligent woman and Julian was a true gentleman.

I recommend it if you're looking for an untypical historical romance book with an unusual love romance.
