Calla Fletcher returns to Toronto a different person, struggling to find direction and still very much in love with the rugged bush pilot she left behind. When Jonah arrives on her doorstep with a proposition she can’t dismiss, she takes the leap and rushes back to Alaska to begin their exciting future together.

But Calla soon learns that even the best intentions can lead to broken promises, and that compromise comes with a hefty price—a log cabin in interior rural Alaska that feels as isolating as the western tundra.

With Jonah gone more than he’s home, one neighbor who insists on transforming her into a true Alaskan, and another who seems more likely to shoot her than come to her aid, Calla grapples with forging her own path. In a world with roaming wildlife that has her constantly watching over her shoulder and harsh conditions that stretch far beyond the cold, dark, winter months, just stepping outside her front door can be daunting.

This is not the future Calla had in mind, leaving her to fear that perhaps she is doomed to follow in her mother’s fleeing footsteps after all.

I'd be lying if I said I was excited to read this book. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved the first book in this series (it got five stars from me, after all), but I didn't really see the need for the second book and I didn't know why this is a series, so I was normally a little sceptical before starting this.

Let me start by saying that I absolutely loved the writing, which is no surprise. I also really loved reading about life in Alaska because the author really threw in some nice details and beautifully showed how life is there with the amazing descriptions and all the little trips around!

I also absolutely love all the covers on these books. They're simply magnificent. Gorgeous!

But that's where it ends for me. This book was more about Calla, her life and her relationships with other people around than her relationship with Jonah and that was disappointing. Especially because Calla was whiny, immature and portrayed as someone weak because she didn't stand up for herself because she wanted to please everyone around her - especially Jonah.

And Jonah was mostly always working, so we didn't read much about him. This didn't sit well with Calla, but she accepted it because that's just who Jonah is and she was letting him live his dreams while she completely forgot about hers and decided to become a housewife instead.

So, Jonah got the girl, threw in some sweet promises for her so they bought a house (somewhere Calla didn't want to live, by the way, and he had to persuade her because it was what he wanted) and started living together and then he stopped being around and just didn't care much about putting in work to keep her.

In my opinion, this book was completely unnecessary and it sadly ruined this series for me a little. The first book is still staying one of my favourites I've read this year, but this one didn't really excite me. It was boring on most parts, it felt stretched and I had to really push myself to finish it.
